How to create a custom text transformation on Mac

Making a script takes a minute; after that it's a menu item like any built-in.

  1. 1

    Open Custom Scripts

Click the Clip Text Transform icon in the menu bar, choose Manage Custom Scripts…, then Add New.

  2. 2

    Fill in Find and Replace

Name the script, type what to find and what to put in its place. Type a sample under Testing and watch the result update as you go.

  3. 3

    Save

It’s in your menu. From now on: copy, click your script, paste.

Custom find-replace & regex scripts

A script is three things: a Find text, a Replace text, and a Regular Expression toggle. Off, the script swaps text literally; on, Find is a pattern. Enough for the things no built-in covers:

The preview updates as you type. When you want the pattern side — groups, flags, worked examples — see what a single find & replace rule can do.

The {text} placeholder

{text} goes in the Replace field only. Leave Find empty, and {text} stands for your whole clipboard text — the script becomes a wrapper:

  • Wrap in backticks
    Find (leave empty)
    Replace `{text}`
    let x = 1 `let x = 1`

Inline code for a chat message.

  • Checklist item
    Find (leave empty)
    Replace - [ ] {text}
    Buy milk - [ ] Buy milk

    A ready-made checklist item.

Start from a ready-made script

The Script Library button in the Custom Scripts window opens a collection of ready-made scripts — whitespace and typography fixes, cleanup, reformatting — grouped by category. Click Add and it becomes one of your own scripts. The collection is topped up over time.

Import & export — share your presets

A style guide is a set of transformations. Build it once, click Export in the Custom Scripts window, and your scripts are written to a single file — hand it to a colleague, or commit it to the team repository. On their Mac, Import reads that file and adds the scripts next to their own. Want the same scripts on your other Mac? Optional iCloud sync — off by default — goes through your own iCloud account, not through us.

Keep the menu tidy — Favorites, Recent, order and hidden scripts

Scripts accumulate; the menu doesn't have to. Favorites sit at the top of the menu, Recent holds what you've just run, and Settings → Manage Script Order… lets you reorder scripts and hide the ones you rarely need without deleting them. In Options you can switch off whole sections of the menu. History is separate: an archive of past transformations, where you open an entry and copy its original or its result text.

Your scripts run on your Mac, from any app

A script runs on whatever you copied, from whichever app you copied it in — a browser, an editor, a translation tool. It runs on your Mac: the text you convert stays on your Mac, with no cloud step in the middle.

Frequently asked questions

Can a custom script change letter case?

No. A script replaces text; it cannot upper- or lower‑case what it finds, with or without regular expressions. Changing case is the job of the built‑in case transformations — Uppercase, Lowercase, Capitalize All Words, Capitalize First Word. Need both? Run the built‑in first, then your script: two clicks.

Can I edit a script from the library?

Yes. Add it to your scripts and it’s yours: rename it, change Find or Replace, switch the Regular Expression toggle — like any script of your own.

How do I share my scripts with a teammate?

Click Export in the Custom Scripts window — your scripts are saved to a file. Your teammate clicks Import and picks that file; the scripts appear in their menu.

Can I hide a script from the menu without deleting it?

Yes. Open Settings → Manage Script Order… and click the eye icon next to the script: it disappears from the menu but stays in your list, and one more click brings it back.
